Follow one device across the DDI system
A laptop joining an office network shows why DNS, DHCP, and IPAM are more useful when their data and workflows stay connected.
IPAM records the subnet, address pool, ownership, purpose, and reservations that define what should exist.
DHCP allocates an available address and supplies the client with its gateway, DNS servers, lease time, and other network settings.
Controlled dynamic updates can connect the active lease to forward and reverse DNS records.
An operator can trace the device from name to address, lease, network, owner, and change history without reconciling separate inventories by hand.
What this does not mean
- DDI is a single network protocol.
- DDI is an operational approach that integrates DNS, DHCP, and IPAM. Each component still has its own protocols, data, and failure modes.
- Installing one DDI product automatically creates trustworthy data.
- A platform helps, but ownership, lifecycle rules, reconciliation, and change discipline are what make the data dependable.
- If name resolution works, the full DDI chain is healthy.
- A cached DNS answer can succeed while a lease, reservation, address record, or IPAM assignment is stale or inconsistent.
A practical review order
- Capture the client’s address, lease, gateway, DNS servers, and lease-granting server.
- Compare forward and reverse DNS answers using the resolver the client actually uses.
- Match the active lease and DNS records to the intended IPAM network, owner, and lifecycle state.
- Check relay paths, DNS views, update ownership, and automation history at the boundary where the evidence diverges.
- Correct the authoritative source, then reconcile downstream systems rather than editing every copy independently.
